Finished for Friday: Mercury Falls

I really enjoyed this book.  One of the great things about owning a Kindle is the opportunity to find new authors who are publishing their own works and in some cases introducing them with free editions.  I picked up this one a while back when it was free.

Christine Temetri, who makes a living reporting on apocalyptic cults for a religious newspaper, finds herself reassigned briefly to cover conflict in the Middle East. While there, she miraculously survives a bomb that blows up a building and is given a briefcase to deliver to "Mercury."

As luck or divine providence would have it, the case is no less than one of the four attache cases of the apocalypse and Mercury is a fallen angel, living in Berkeley and perfecting his ping-pong game.

Christine and Mercury set out to prevent the apocalypse.  They don't have much time on their side, but they do have the advantage of the slow wheels of the heavenly bureaucracy and the new linoleum Christine has just installed in her dining room.

Laugh-out-loud humor, in the vein of Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, this is a tale of just how wrong everything can go when clever and inept higher beings cross and double-cross each other in their attempts to finish off the world.  I couldn't put it down.

Mercury Falls was selected for publication by Amazon Encore, which identifies exceptional books and authors and re-introduces them for wider publication.  Currently this book has 4.5 stars with 126 reviews at Amazon.
